Broken Electronics
If your TV, printer, computer or camera is broken you should be able to get a replacement from the retailer you bought it from. Washing machines, dishwashers and ovens are generally replaced by the manufacturer.
My second hand item is broken
If you’ve bought an item from a retailer you’ll generally be able to get a replacement or a refund for an item that is broken. If you’re buying from an individual you’ll most likely be left holding the can, as individual sales aren’t covered by laws in the same way.
Counterfeit Items
Those Dr Beats you got from gumtree don’t look quite right, you might have bought a counterfeit item. If you’re in the UK and the seller is in the UK, then you’re protected. Give the seller a call and ask for an immediate refund, if they don’t comply quickly threatening a call to the police should do the trick.
My Wedding Dress Doesn’t Fit
The shock, the horror, of waking up on your wonderful day to realize your wedding dress hasn’t been made to the correct size. This is a custom item, but are you covered? The answer is yes, you’re covered by the sales of goods act 1979.
My Wedding Dress Is Damaged
Under the sale of goods act the dress must be exactly as described, if its not you should be able to get a refund or a replacement. Buying online gives you Distance Selling Regulations (DSRs) as cover, you can reject the dress from when you purchased to 7 days after it has been delivered.
My Wedding Dress Hasn’t Arrived
Even worse than having a dress that doesn’t fit or one that is damaged is having no dress at all. First thing to do is contact the retailer and explain your problem, then follow this up by sending a letter in writing stating when the dress needs to be delivered by. If you’re left out and have to buy another wedding dress at the last minute you can claim a refund + expenses for anything else that has left you out of pocket.
